Fundamentals of Management

Introduction

Fundamentals of Management in this course focus on the study of four functions of Management, Planning, Organizing, Leading, and controlling in the organization in order to manage effectively to achieve the organization’s goal.

 
Course Objectives
This course is designed to provide students the fundamentals of Management. After learning this course the student will be able to:
1. Understand what is nature of Management, the functions of Management.
2.

Know how to divide the level of Management; what their roles are? such as Top management’s roles, middle management’s roles, First line management’s roles, and operating employee’s roles.

3. Understand the Social responsibility of and Ethics of Management
4.

Know what is planning, how to do planning, organizing the planning function, and time management.

5.

Understand Strategic Planning and Organizational Objectives such as steps in the strategic planning process, formulating strategy, implementing strategy.

6. Know how to make decision, step in decision making.
7. Understand the Organizing, integration of specialized task, function, Organization chart, vertical integration and horizontal integration, matrix structure.
8. Understand the Human Resource management, human resource planning, employee’s motivation, Leadership management and controlling.

"Introduction to Management"
  - Introduces the concept and the function of management, the planning, the organizing, the leading, the controlling, and the level of management.  
 
 
 
  2.
"Environment, Social Responsibility and Ethics"
  - Describes the management environment, the internal environment, concept of corporate culture, political-legal environment, economic environment, cultural and social environment, technological environment.  
  3.
"Planning and Strategic Planning"
  - Presents the planning, the important of planning, planning and decision making, the types of plans, the scope of planning, strategic planning, Tactical planning, operational planning, the step in the strategic planning process such as defining the mission of the organization, developing the organization objectives, assessing organizational resources, risk and opportunities, implementing the strategy, monitoring and adapting the strategic plans ..  
  4.
"Decision Making"
  - Discuss the certainty, risk, and the uncertainty in the decision making. Presents the categories of decision making, the step in the decision making, and monitoring the decision making.  
  5.
"Organizing, Organizational Structure and Design"
  - Introduces the alternatives theory organizing, comparing classical and contemporary perspectives on organizing, formal organization structure, span of management, matrix structure, authority, control, evaluation of organization design concept, the types of organization.  
  6.
"Human Resource Management" (HRM)
  - Discuss yesterday and today HRM, human resource planning, job design, job analysis, job specification, the recruitment and selection process, screening interviews, performance appraisal, compensation and employee benefits.  
  Mid-semester Examination      
  7.
"Communication"
  - Describes interpersonal communication, the basic communication model, the method of communication with group, and communication networks.  
  8.
"Motivation"
  - Presents the theory of motivation, the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Alderfer’s EGR theory, Herzberg’s Two-Factor or Motivation-hygiene Theory, McClelland’s Theory of Motivation, and Expectancy Theory.  
  9.
"Leading"
  - Discuss the relationship between leaders and managers, the Trait and Behavioral Theories, the contingency Theories of Leadership, the new leadership approach, and the Charismatic approach to leadership.  
  10.
"Controlling"
  - Presents the relationship of controlling with planning, organizing and leading. It also describes the importance of controlling, the monitoring performance, the steps in the control process and the control strategies.

Target Audience

This course is designed for Khmer speaking business students either enrolled in one of PPIU’s degree programs or interested in improving their knowledge of basic business concepts and practices. Participants should have access to an Internet connected computer, basic computer skills (typing, email, Web browser and file management) and a good understanding of Khmer.

 
Grading and Student Assessment

The grading system for PPIU online students is the same as is used to evaluate and reward PPIU students attending classroom courses at the University in Phnom Penh. Soon after submitting an assignment, instructors will evaluate the student’s work and award a grade. The grade will be posted to the student’s online gradebook with justifications. Students can view the grades on their assignments and exams by visiting the online [Gradebook] page.

 
In this course, a final grade will be calculated based on the following:
  • Assignments – 30%
  • Mid-semester examination – 20%
  • Final examination – 50%
  •

        A 4 High Distinction 85-100    
        B 3 Distinction 75-84    
        C 2 Credit 65-74    
        D 1 Pass 50-64    
        CP 1- Conceded Pass 47-49

    Mr. Rous Bunthy
    Currently is a lecturer and assistant to director at Phnom Penh International University (PPIU). He holds two master degrees, Master of Science in International Finance from CERAM, European School of Business, France and Master in Management from Royal University of Law and Economic, Phnom Penh Cambodia. At the present, he is also an accountant student of the ACCA and expects to get the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the near future.
